It was getting late, and Gu Shuangshuang and Tian Niu had not yet had dinner, so Tian Ermei quickly went to the kitchen to prepare something for them to eat.

The food here was far from what you’d find in the city, but Gu Shuangshuang enjoyed it greatly.

Seeing this, the old lady was overjoyed that Shuangshuang lacked the finicky demeanor of city folks.

After the meal, the older sister and Ermei gathered around them, peppering Gu Shuangshuang with questions.

Learning that Gu Shuangshuang was from the Military Medical University and would become a doctor after graduation, they became extremely envious.

Gu Shuangshuang told them many stories about the world beyond the mountains, sparking in the two young sisters a deep longing for life outside.

She encouraged them to read more and someday go see the world for themselves.

Gathered around the kerosene lamp, the family chatted for a long time. Finally, Tian Niu’s dad came back from outside.

Upon seeing Gu Shuangshuang, he knew she was the future daughter-in-law Tian Niu had mentioned.

Delighted by her beauty and down-to-earth nature, he was very pleased.

With regard to the daughter-in-law Tian Niu had brought back, they were quite satisfied.

Gu Shuangshuang, seeing that everyone had arrived, then brought out the gifts she had bought for them.

Tian Niu’s parents, not accustomed to wearing new clothes regularly, were over the moon with the new clothes their daughter-in-law had brought, smiling so widely they could hardly close their mouths.

After trying on the new clothes in the evening, they folded them neatly and stored them in the wardrobe, eagerly awaiting the first day of the new year to show them off in the village and evoke the neighbors’ envy for the wonderful daughter-in-law Tian Niu had found.

Time in the mountains passed slowly, but Gu Shuangshuang was quite tired from her first day there, and soon started yawning.

”Older sister, Ermei! Go tidy up for your brother and sister-in-law. Let them get some rest!” Tian Niu’s mom ordered.

”Alright!” the older sister and Ermei cheerfully went to make the bed.

Gu Shuangshuang had assumed they would prepare two separate rooms, but when it came time to sleep, she realized they had only made up one room.

Tian Niu felt awkward, ”Mom! Could you also make up my older brother’s room for us? Shuangshuang and I are not married yet, it’s not proper for us to sleep together.”

On hearing this, Tian Niu’s mom realized her simple son knew to avoid impropriety, so she said, ”Your older brother’s room is filled with clutter, it can’t be cleared out in a short time.”

”If it’s not possible, then I’ll just share a room with the older sister and Ermei,” Gu Shuangshuang suggested.

”Our rooms here are small, and so are the beds! A bed fits two people just right, but it’s too cramped for three. You’ll be staying here quite a while, so if it’s not okay, you can sleep with my mom tonight, and tomorrow, I’ll clear out my brother’s room for you,” Tian Niu was certainly bearing in mind what the chief of staff had told him.

”Well, it could work, but I snore at night, and I’m afraid it might keep you awake,” Tian Niu’s mom said.

The snoring had become an issue as she got older, loud enough at night to rival thunder.

Fortunately, her husband didn’t mind, as he snored too, and neither could complain about the other.

Seeing the family’s dilemma, Gu Shuangshuang decided not to make a fuss, as she and Tian Niu had shared a room and bed before: ”It’s fine, if it’s not convenient, I don’t mind sharing a room with Tian Niu.”

”Exactly, after all, you’re going to get married soon, aren’t you?” Tian Niu’s mom thought this was the best solution, killing two birds with one stone.

Tian Niu felt a bit embarrassed, hesitating without agreeing.

Watching her brother’s discomfort, Tian Ermei couldn’t help but laugh, ”Brother, look at you, all reluctant. You’re more finicky than your fiancée. She didn’t say a word, and here you are, making a fuss.”
