The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

”A year ago, near Li Family Bay on Provincial Road 209, was there a woman with disheveled hair, wearing ragged clothes and not even wearing shoes, appearing in front of your car?”

”After you hit her, you didn’t call the police or render aid, but instead tossed her onto the mountainside—does this incident not ring a bell at all?”

Zhang Long’s breathing became noticeably rapid, he swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple moved violently, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.

”I... I don’t know. I have no idea what you are talking about...”

”Don’t know?” Mr. Qin stared into his eyes. ”Then why are you trembling? Why don’t you dare to look at me?”

”I’m not nervous!”

Zhang Long almost shouted, yet his voice carried an imperceptible tremble.

”Let me tell you!” Mr. Qin suddenly raised his hand, and with a ”bang” slapped the table, causing the entire table to shake.

”Our forensics team performed a 3D scan modeling of the front of your large truck, and compared it with the fracture patterns of the deceased’s ribs—the dent on the right front side of your truck matches perfectly with the curvature, depth, and angle of force of her rib fractures! You tell me, is there such a precise ’coincidence’ in the world?!”

Upon hearing this, Zhang Long abruptly raised his head, emotionally retorting, ”What do you mean by that?”

”Don’t I know my own vehicle? After so many years of driving, how could I not know if there’s a dent on the car body?”

”Absolutely impossible! You can’t fabricate facts out of thin air to frame me!”

Mr. Qin responded calmly, with a steady tone, ”Frame you? We performed precise measurements using professional instruments. Even the slightest dent cannot escape detection.”

”More importantly, the shape of the dent on your vehicle matches perfectly with the deceased’s rib fracture locations and the contours of the cranial depression.”

”Such a highly consistent match might not be easily explained away as a mere ’coincidence’, right?”

Upon hearing this, Zhang Long seemed to be frozen in place, staring blankly, his gaze wandering back and forth between Mr. Qin and another officer’s face, his lips trembling slightly but unable to speak a word.

After a good while, he seemed to regain his voice, though his tone, still strong, now lacked some conviction: ”I... I don’t know what you are talking about.”

”In any case, I did not hit anyone, absolutely not.”

”As for the dents you mentioned, isn’t it normal for some marks to appear from driving on the road, like rocks kicked up by the tires of a truck on the opposite lane hitting the vehicle? Can’t they cause dents?”

”It’s indeed possible to form dents,” Mr. Qin leaned forward slightly, his gaze piercing, ”but isn’t it too coincidental that every dent,” its contour, depth, and position, matches exactly with the victim’s injuries? Such precise matching would statistically be an extremely low probability event.”

Zhang Long instinctively avoided his gaze, a trace of barely detectable panic in his voice, ”Whether it’s a coincidence or not, I don’t know, but I feel like you’re intentionally setting me up with this explanation!”

”Intentionally setting you up?” Mr. Qin raised an eyebrow slightly, ”All our conclusions are based on solid measurement data and scientific comparisons, every step is recorded and verifiable.”

”What good is having data?” Zhang Long seemed to grasp a breakthrough, his tone suddenly becoming urgent, ”Apart from my vehicle, could there not be other vehicles potentially causing similar damage?”

”Do you have any direct evidence proving that it was definitely my vehicle that hit?”

”You can’t convict me on just a few dents, can you?”

For a moment, Mr. Qin found himself at a loss for words, his previously firm stance softened somewhat.

He fell silent for a moment, his brow slightly furrowed.

Indeed, from the viewpoint of evidence chain, while the current matching results are highly consistent, they are ultimately comparisons of similar traces.

Determining Zhang Long’s vehicle as the sole possible tool causing the victim’s injuries still requires other direct or indirect evidence for corroboration.

Yet, the incident has occurred some time ago, with significant destruction at the scene, limiting the effective evidence that can be gathered.

At this moment, finding a new breakthrough seems considerably difficult.
