Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

The situation at the rescue site was extremely tense. Many patients had open wounds, and after being soaked in mud, they were at high risk of infection, necessitating debridement.

Doctors and nurses skillfully coordinated to help treat the patients’ wounds and soothe the wounded, hoping to alleviate their suffering as much as possible.

It had been two days and nights of continuous rescue efforts. The doctors in the tent were very exhausted, but they could only take turns resting.

Because Ji Chuan had the best surgical skills, the most difficult surgeries were entrusted to him. Each surgery took six to seven hours, and he had less than half an hour of rest before another surgery began. Even steel and iron bones couldn’t withstand such enormous consumption.

”Dr. Ji, take a break!” After completing an outdoor operation, a colleague handed him a cup of glucose to replenish his energy. ”It looks like there are still quite a few injured people to come. You can’t keep pushing yourself. If you collapse, it would be even more challenging for us to continue the work.”

Ji Chuan took the glucose and drank two gulps, saying, ”Send the injured to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible. Our environment here isn’t sterile, and post-operative infections can easily occur.”

”Dr. Ji...” Noticing his attention was entirely focused on directing the work, his colleague repeated with more emphasis.

”Alright, I got it. I’ll finish the glucose and then go rest, okay?” Ji Chuan replied with a helpless smile.

”That’s more like it! You are the soul of our team. If something happens to you, who will lead us in our work?”

Ji Chuan finished the glucose, walked out of the rescue tent, and immediately collapsed onto the bed in his tent. Over the past two days and nights, his physical energy had been greatly depleted. If he didn’t rest, he himself felt that he would soon collapse.

He decided that no matter what happened outside, he would sleep first to restore some energy, unless it was a life-critical surgery. Otherwise, he wouldn’t get up.

Ji Chuan had just closed his eyes when he heard a commotion outside.

The noisy footsteps wandering around the tent and the heart-wrenching cries disturbed Ji Chuan’s peace of mind.

He was about to get up but thought better of it, deciding not to check. The team he brought along was still an elite team; they could handle most surgeries.

He had to trust his colleagues and assistants.

”I beg you all! Please save my father! His whole life has been full of hardships, and he hasn’t enjoyed a single day of happiness! And now there’s this landslide...” The elderly man’s son, a dutiful son, knelt crying on entering with his barely breathing father.

”Don’t worry. We will do everything possible to save him. Please step outside; we need to prepare for surgery! Please do not come in and disturb us!” the doctor said.

”Alright, alright!”

The elderly man’s condition seemed quite complicated. He had been hit by falling rocks on the lower abdomen and left lower limb and appeared to have been buried underground for some time, as the blood in his lower limb had already coagulated.

These were only the external injuries, but the actual situation was likely much more severe. The elderly man looked very dispirited, indicating there might be other injuries.

”Come on, let’s conduct a further examination!” said Dr. Lin, the deputy director of surgery, directing the onsite doctors. ”Dr. Lei, please assist me.”
