Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

”Is it appropriate for me to go?” Yan Huan flashed an awkward smile. She was about to accompany Ji Chuan to his house; what kind of role should she take on?

”It’s appropriate. There’s nothing inappropriate about it.” Ji Chuan was, of course, more than willing.

As long as Yan Huan was willing to go with him, he could be happy all day.

”I need to think about it.” Yan Huan hesitated a bit.

After all, Yan Huan’s family was thousands of miles away, and going to Ji Chuan’s house wasn’t like just visiting a neighbor in the compound. You couldn’t just decide to go and come back without causing some thoughts.

Ji Chuan seemed to see through Yan Huan’s mind.

”It’s alright. Just treat it as a trip! Both my parents work in education, so their mindset isn’t rigid or inflexible. Even if you come, as long as I don’t say anything, they’ll just consider you as a friend of mine. So, don’t worry! It’s not like you visiting my house would change anything between us.” Ji Chuan said.

Yan Huan lowered her eyes, thought carefully for a moment, and then said, ”When are you leaving?”

”It’s up to you.” Ji Chuan spoke softly.

”In the afternoon, then. Give me the rest of the morning to think about it.”

”Alright.”

.........

Feng Yuzhi was playing with a rattle drum to entertain her little grandson when she heard the door open. She put down the toy, stood up, and went out to see what was happening.

Seeing Yan Huan come back in a hurry, she dashed straight upstairs as soon as she got home.

”What’s going on now?” she murmured to herself, following Yan Huan upstairs.

The door was open, and she saw Yan Huan standing dazedly in front of the open wardrobe.

”Yan Huan...? What are you doing?”

”Mom?” Yan Huan snapped back to reality and saw Feng Yuzhi coming up. ”I’m thinking about something.”

”What is it? Tell me about it.”

”Ji Chuan invited me to his house.” Yan Huan honestly told Feng Yuzhi. ”I’m hesitating right now. Mom, can you give me some advice? Should I go or not?”

Feng Yuzhi’s eyes lit up, and she was almost in tears with joy, ”My dear, I’m so happy that you’re asking for my opinion for the first time regarding a matter of the heart. Honestly, Ji Chuan is a good kid. The fact that he’s invited you shows he’s already placed you in that position. If you have feelings for him, you should go. Follow your own heart. If you don’t want to go, then don’t force it. Ji Chuan doesn’t want to pressure you, and neither do I.”

”Then...should I think about it some more?”

”Hmm. You consider it yourself. I’ll go downstairs first.”

Feng Yuzhi went downstairs and sat on the sofa, waiting for Yan Huan’s decision.

In truth, she really wanted to tell Yan Huan, ”What is there to consider? If you don’t seize such a good man now, there really might not be another chance.”

But now, she gradually understood Yan Huan’s nature.

The more you push her, the more she outwardly complies but inwardly resists.

It’s better to let her figure it out herself.

Ten minutes later, Yan Huan came downstairs with her suitcase. Seeing Feng Yuzhi sitting in the living room, Yan Huan blushed with embarrassment, ”Mom, why are you sitting here? Shouldn’t you be looking after the child?”

”Of course, I should.” Feng Yuzhi beamed with delight and immediately went into the storage room to gather a pile of things, ”How could the not-so-pretty daughter-in-law meet her in-laws empty-handed for the first time?”

”Mom, your imagination is too vivid...” Yan Huan said, facepalming.
