Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1900: Chapter 1901: Waiting for His Arrival

Walking along, Gu Shuangshuang attentively gathered information about the village: “Auntie, I’m new here. If there’s anything I’m not accustomed to, please do forgive me!”

“No need for formalities. People in this village are exceptionally kind. I’m an outsider too. When my husband passed away in middle age, it was the village folks who supported me, and that’s how I managed to get by.” The auntie said as she walked, “So, living here, you needn’t have any worries.”

“Thank you so much, Auntie.”

“No need for thanks, it’s nothing.”

“Auntie, does your village have people who served in the army?” Tian Ermei interjected.

“Of course! Many people from our village are in the army outside. Here, every household takes pride in military service! However, those serving are all male soldiers. Our neighbor, Old Gan’s family, has a girl serving in the military, and she’s quite famous in the village!” The auntie spoke with great excitement, as if referring to her own daughter.

“A female soldier!” Gu Shuangshuang said pointedly, “When she returns, she won’t be short on suitors, will she? Doesn’t she have the pick of all the young men in the village?”

“Indeed.” The auntie replied with a smile, “Gan Tian is a good girl! The young men in the village are eager to marry her, but the girl keeps saying she doesn’t want to seek a partner yet, that she wants to improve herself and stay a few more years in the army. We all really believed her, but it turns out she already had someone in mind…”

“Really?” Gu Shuangshuang asked with restraint, hiding a belly full of dissatisfaction, “No one knows which talented young man caught her eye!”

The auntie, oblivious to Gu Shuangshuang’s odd demeanor, continued speaking energetically: “That young man is thick-browed and big-eyed, definitely comes across as an honest person! You came a bit late. If you had arrived a bit earlier, you might have seen him…”

“Auntie, are you sure? Maybe they’re not in a relationship.” Tian Ermei asked, unwilling to believe.

She’d rather hope they were mistaken than believe that her brother was secretly forming a new relationship behind his sister-in-law’s back.

“How could I be mistaken? Auntie’s eyes are sharp! Just from a glance, I can tell who likes whom!” The auntie’s words grew increasingly exaggerated, even though she’d only met them once, she spoke as if she knew all about it.

“Oh oh!” Gu Shuangshuang, feeling annoyed, no longer wanted to inquire, merely uttered a couple of sounds to hurriedly end the topic.

Gu Shuangshuang stayed here for a full month.

The people here all knew the auntie’s house had new tenants, yet no one had seen what the latest tenants looked like.

They only knew there were two women and a child.

The two women lived next door to Gan Tian’s house, and soon Gan Tian should have realized their presence.

But to Gu Shuangshuang’s puzzlement, Gan Tian seemed not to pay them any mind whatsoever.

This attitude somewhat displeased Gu Shuangshuang.

She couldn’t tell if Gan Tian was truly unaware or pretending to be.

Since Gan Tian wouldn’t come to see her, Gu Shuangshuang didn’t greet her either, pretending not to know. She vaguely sensed Gan Tian was peculiar, but couldn’t pinpoint what was odd.

According to the auntie, market days in Hexi Village attracted the most people.

Since the market here was the largest, people from all around would come to join the excitement.

If one wanted to find someone, market day was the best chance to meet or find them.

Gu Shuangshuang patiently waited through market day after market day, and finally, a month later, she saw Tian Niu appear once more.

The smell of locust blossoms filled the air of May…
