Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1485: Chapter 1485: No Ill Intent Towards You

Mu Mian’s eyes flickered with surprise before settling back into calmness, ”No. I don’t want to hide anything from you all either. You’re being too serious. Qin Jian, I know you are military personnel, good people. I just want to help you heal your wounds and then watch you return to your original lives. I bear no ill will towards you. And please, stop prying into my affairs.”

”We’re just too curious. We mean no harm to you, either. Of course, at first we thought to play dumb, to act as though we knew nothing, but your father, he comes every three or five days. Whenever he comes, you argue with him in the courtyard. It honestly makes us feel like we’ve been troubling and burdening you,” said Tian Niu.

”My dad is just that kind of person. Don’t mind him,” Mu Mian finished, bowing her head to start eating dumplings, ”Come on, eat up. They’ll get cold if you don’t.”

Seeing he could get no more information out of Mu Mian, Qin Jian decided not to ask further.

The village was silent, even on Chinese New Year’s Eve there were no sounds of firecrackers.

After dinner, Mu Mian cleared away the pots and dishes. Before leaving, she said to Qin Jian and Tian Niu, ”Tonight is New Year’s Eve. Although you are far from your relatives and homes, I still hope you can have a happy New Year’s Eve.”

”Thank you,” responded Qin Jian courteously and politely.

Mu Mian closed the door and left, and tranquility was restored in the room.

”Commander, this young lady just won’t relay our message. Why do I feel so uneasy about this? We’re not going to be fattened up only to be chopped up with a cleaver and turned into oversized meat-stuffed buns, are we?” Tian Niu recalled the storytellers from his childhood, mentioning the tale of Sun Erniang.

”Your imagination is quite rich,” Qin Jian chuckled, ”If she had such intentions, why wait until now? When we were half dead from our fall, it would have been much simpler to just chop us up then.”

”You sure do trust this girl,” said Tian Niu.

”Mm-hmm. Her eyes seem pure and kind. They don’t look like they harbor any ill intent.” His years as a reconnaissance company commander weren’t for nothing; he had at least the basic skill of interpreting people’s words and expressions.

”Ah. So why do you think she’s always hiding things from us? Every time we ask about her and her father, she dodges the question.”

”She must have her difficulties,” Qin Jian surmised.

After hearing that, Tian Niu frowned and complained, ”Whether she has difficulties or not, I don’t know right now. But I sure do. I need to go... urgently.”

”Then why don’t you drink less soup?”

In the kitchen, Mu Mian was absorbed in washing dishes.

All of a sudden, she heard footsteps behind her, and the corners of her mouth twisted into a sly smile. As the steps drew closer, she suddenly turned around and shouted, ”Hah!”

The person standing behind her was a young boy about her age, seventeen or eighteen.

Instead of being startled by Mu Mian’s shout, he looked annoyed, ”My footsteps were so light, how could you hear them?”

Mu Mian smiled sweetly, ”Lin Sheng! Did you know you have a very strong scent of smoke on you? I could smell it on you long before I heard your footsteps.”

”Mu Mian, you’re really clever,” Lin Sheng lightly flicked her forehead, ”To be able to marry a girl like you would be the fortune of my last lifetime.”

Mu Mian’s face flushed red, she retorted, ”Who said I’m going to marry you? You’re really full of yourself. Hurry up and go inside to check on things. They finished their meal a while ago; they might need your help now.”
