Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1174: Chapter 1174: Are You Marrying Off Your Daughter, or Selling Her?

”Isn’t this just outright bullying?”

Just as An Hao was about to say something, she heard Niu Xiuling start speaking again, ”Two hundred for the sedan chair, two hundred for the change of address. Plus...”

Niu Xiuling hadn’t finished speaking when An Hao could no longer bear it and interrupted, ”Aunt Niu, are you marrying off your daughter or selling her?”

This remark was too damaging.

Qin Jian clenched her hand, signaling her to cool down and discuss it later.

After all, with so many people around, if she spoke out and hurt the other’s face, it would make it difficult to discuss the marriage further and might even lead to unnecessary trouble.

And it would be bad for An Ping as well, as this was his future mother-in-law.

An Hao naturally understood what Qin Jian meant, but she didn’t think the same way.

A wife should be virtuous.

She wanted An Ping to marry a virtuous and prudent wife, someone who was broad-minded and visionary, and, importantly, someone who would integrate into the An Family and interact as one of them.

Their current situation wasn’t lacking food or money, so if a girl from the Niu Family married into their family, she would naturally not be treated poorly.

The young couple sharing weal and woe, and living harmoniously, was more important than anything else.

But if all one talks about is money, then An Hao couldn’t help but wonder whether the Niu Family was more interested in An Ping’s wealth or An Ping himself.

If her parents have this attitude, then what about her herself?

An Hao was unhappy, and Niu Xiuling was even more upset. Being publicly humiliated like that was a slap in her face, ”How can you talk like that? The adults are discussing matters. Is it your place to butt in? Who do you think you are?”

She glared at An Shuchao, her voice full of anger, ”Is this the attitude to discuss a marriage? With this kind of attitude, how can the wedding proceed? Can you even make a decision?”

”I can make a decision, mother-in-law, please don’t be angry. Whatever amount you ask for, we will give; we are determined to have this daughter-in-law,” An Shuchao said, trying to smooth things over with a smiling face.

”That’s more like it.”

”What’s more like it?” An Hao frowned and looked at Liu Xiuling, ”If you really want this marriage to happen, both sides must hold a sincere attitude. All you talk about is money, money, money. Is your daughter marrying An Ping or is she marrying money? Even if you ask for a dowry, keep it within limits; two thousand yuan!! Why don’t you go rob a bank!!!”

Fueled by this attitude from the Niu Family, An Hao felt it wasn’t much better at all.

A reasonable person’s parents shouldn’t have such an attitude.

A marriage should be discussed by both parties.

Asking for a dowry is just for the sake of celebration, an aspect of local custom, which she couldn’t complain about.

A dowry should indeed be given, but it shouldn’t start at two thousand.

Two thousand yuan could build a big house in the village and even buy some land to spare.

Liu Xiuling was quick-tempered and impulsive, and An Hao’s words hit her where it hurt.

She slapped the table and stood up, ”What a sharp-tongued girl you are. When you married into the Qin Family, how much dowry did you ask for? Two thousand! A full two thousand! Despite the poverty back then, you still demanded two thousand from them! Why can’t I ask your family for two thousand? You always talk about selling daughters, but I see this as the pot calling the kettle black! It’s the same thing all over.”

An Hao was genuinely upset by this remark. Today, she had met her match in an argument.

It seemed the other party wasn’t just making a sky-high demand without preparation; she was actually echoing the dowry An Hao received back in the day.
