Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 830: Chapter 830 A Gift with Ulterior Motives

Cheng Yu glanced at Qin Jian, shook her head with difficulty, and lied against her heart, ”No! My love lies with another.”

”Ms. Cheng, you’re so pitiable!” An Hao felt that fate was so unjust, to have tormented such a gentle person as Ms. Cheng into this state.

”I don’t think I’m pitiable.” Cheng Yu’s tears fell as she wore a beautifully tragic smile, ”In my whole life, I have never felt there was anything I couldn’t let go of. Only two things. First, I wanted to meet the company commander who was willing to give up his life to save mine. Second, I hope to be with the one I love forever, although that’s just a dream.”

”Ms. Cheng, sometimes one shouldn’t be too obsessed with something.” The silent Qin Jian, who had been listening to the story all along, finally spoke, ”On the battlefield, there are many such warriors who would sacrifice their lives for their comrades! They also do not want anything in return! I think if that company commander knew, he definitely wouldn’t want you to keep dwelling on this. Perhaps he just reacted instinctively to save you, he didn’t ask for anything in return!”

”How do you know his mindset so clearly?” Cheng Yu pressed.

”Because I’ve been to the battlefield, too, and someone saved me! That’s what my comrade told me.” After saying this, Qin Jian changed the subject, ”Ms. Cheng, the topic of war is too heavy! Let’s try not to talk about it anymore. We live in a time of peace, we should think more about the good things.”

”Exactly,” An Hao agreed.

Cheng Yu was unsure of what Qin Jian meant by his words, but she felt she had said enough for the day and it was time to stop.

So, with a hint of tears, she said, ”You’re right! Well then, the food has gotten cold, let’s eat quickly. It’s all my fault for bringing that up.”

”It’s only human,” An Hao said with a smile, ”Forget those displeasures! There is a better life waiting for you in the future.”

Qin Jian heard this and turned his head to look at An Hao with a somewhat complex expression.

”Why are you looking at me?” An Hao noticed Qin Jian’s gaze and turned to look back.

Qin Jian didn’t speak; he simply reached out and stroked her head.

An Hao felt inexplicably puzzled; what was going on with Qin Jian?

Dinner took two whole hours to finish. An Hao was washing dishes in the kitchen, and after a short rest, it was time for Qin Jian to leave.

After helping An Hao tidy up the dishes, Cheng Yu suddenly remembered something. She took something out of her bag and sat down in front of Qin Jian, ”Chief of Staff, I have a gift for you.”

An Hao, who had just finished washing her hands and came out of the restroom, heard Cheng Yu was giving something to Qin Jian and immediately felt it must be a mistake, ”Ms. Cheng, isn’t that supposed to be for someone else?”

”No.” Cheng Yu smiled, took out an object from a red brocade box; it was a beautifully crafted miniature tank made from bullet casings,”I picked up these casings from the China-Vietnam battlefield and made this when I had nothing to do. It’s made of sixty-eight casings! These years, wherever I went, I always took it with me. This is my first time visiting your home, and I had no gift to bring. After much thought, it felt right to give this to the Chief of Staff. Please accept this token of my appreciation.”

”Such a precious gift, how could I possibly accept it?” Qin Jian graciously declined, ”I appreciate Ms. Cheng’s thoughtfulness.”

”Wow, it’s so beautiful!” An Hao admired the item, seemingly unable to put it down.

Seeing his wife’s fondness for the gift, Qin Jian changed his mind,”Alright then. I’ll accept the gift! Thank you, Ms. Cheng.”
