Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 742: Chapter 742: Is This Edible for Humans?

An Hao went to the kitchen to cook. The vegetables at home had been delivered to her by someone from An Ping, who supplied them to the school canteen.

They had plenty of vegetables at home, so there was no need to go out and buy any.

An Hao randomly picked a few vegetables, green beans, garlic scapes, and potatoes. Her movements were swift as she washed and chopped the vegetables, then tossed them into the wok with oil and salt, without any other seasonings, and began to stir-fry them quickly.

Halfway through, she tasted it twice, added another spoonful of salt, and another, until even she felt it was inedible, and quickly served the dishes on the table.

In the pot was a tomato and dough-ball soup, to which she had also added a good amount of salt.

While cooking, she boiled two kettles of water, adding a bit of alkaline noodles to each, making sure the taste was strange and hard to swallow.

”Come on! Everyone, come and eat.” An Hao had dished out the rice, arranged the chopsticks, and called the two of them to the meal.

At first glance, the dishes looked very appetizing with their vibrant colors and seemed like they would be delicious.

Song Yueqin was quite pleased, ”How hardworking you are, sister-in-law! I never thought I’d have the honor of eating dishes personally made by you in my lifetime! I’m truly honored!”

The corners of An Hao’s mouth curved, ”You are indeed very honored!”

Song Yueqin delightedly took a bite, but before she could chew, she spat it out, ”An Hao! Is this food edible? How much salt did you put in? And the vegetables are raw.”

Qin Fen took a sip of porridge, and before he could swallow, he spat it out, ”Is this even fit for human consumption?”

”Why can’t it be eaten?” An Hao raised an eyebrow, ”I’m eating it, am I not? If you can’t eat the vegetables, you can eat steamed buns.”

”Are you doing this on purpose?” Qin Fen questioned An Hao.

An Hao slammed her chopsticks down, her expression becoming awkward, ”Qin Fen, dare you say that in front of your brother? I cooked for you out of good will. Are you saying the dishes are missing something? Or the rice, perhaps?”

”But this is just too awful to eat.”

”Too awful? Don’t I eat the same? It’s these dishes—if you don’t like it, don’t eat it. But once you leave this door, don’t you dare say I didn’t cook for you! This is my level of skill, what do you suggest we do?”

Song Yueqin knew full well that An Hao was not of this level; doing so was simply a ploy to shut them up.

”Let’s just make do and eat a little,” Song Yueqin signaled Qin Fen with her eyes.

For now, they just had to make do, and when Qin Jian came back, things would be very different.

An Hao might be able to pull off such tricks on them, but surely not on Qin Jian, right?

”The problem is, it’s inedible even if we try to make do!” Qin Fen was very distressed. It was too salty, far beyond the limit of human endurance.

Even the pickled vegetables they had in winter were not as salty as these dishes.

In the end, Qin Fen and Song Yueqin managed to eat a few bites before giving up. An Hao knew they simply could not eat it, so she hadn’t served them much.

The meal was over; it was about time to leave, wasn’t it?

But those two shameless creatures still refused to leave.

An Hao went to the kitchen to clean the pots and pans. Aside from the bite each person had taken, the two dishes remained untouched.

An Hao rinsed the vegetables to wash away the salt, blanched them until they were cooked through, and stir-fried them again so they could be eaten—nothing was wasted.

After everything was done, An Hao took out the wrapped herbal medicine and soaked it ahead of time for an hour.

While soaking the medicine, Song Yueqin strolled into the kitchen.

Thinking that An Hao hadn’t come out for so long because she was secretly eating, she didn’t expect An Hao to be soaking medicine.

Song Yueqin approached and asked An Hao, ”Are you sick? Taking herbal medicine?”
