Huo Jiayuan heard her mom laugh, and her heart, which had leaped into her throat, finally settled back down. She peeked up at her mom, relieved to see no signs of her blowing her top.

When Huo Weiyu and Lu Fengning, mother and daughter, returned to the dining table, Huo Jiayuan gave her niece a thumbs-up from across the table. The people around the table looked towards the door in unison. Gao Ruyi, the Huo family’s second daughter-in-law, walked in with her youngest son, Huo Xiaoxi. ”Big Sis,” she said, ”you and Feng Ning are back too?”

Huo Weiyu pointed to a spot beside her. ”Yes, come sit.”

Huo Jingrui also looked up to greet Gao Ruyi. ”Second Sister-in-law.”

Gao Ruyi was surprised as well, not expecting her young brother-in-law to be home. After exchanging greetings, she sat down with her son.

Huo Xiaoxi looked at his cousin Lu Fengning, full of curiosity. ”Sister Feng Ning, why is no laughing allowed?”

Seeing Lu Fengning’s expression change, Gao Ruyi hurried over to rescue her rather clueless son. ”Hasn’t Mommy told you not to laugh while eating? You might choke on your food. It must be because your aunt wasn’t behaving, and Sister Feng Ning is reminding her.”

Huo Xiaoxi looked up proudly. ”My teacher said we should be polite children.”

Huo Jiayuan ruffled her little nephew’s hair. ”Looks like those kindergarten classes weren’t in vain.” She then added a meatball to her nephew’s bowl. ”Eat up, this meatball is delicious.” Of course, her niece wasn’t forgotten either. ”Feng Ning, you eat too.”

Huo Jiayuan turned to her second sister-in-law, Gao Ruyi. ”Second Sister-in-law, what brings you back today too?”

Gao Ruyi helped her son mix his noodles. ”Eat slowly,” she told him. After taking care of her son, she cast a glance towards her young brother-in-law and began, ”It’s because I heard our young brother-in-law has found a girlfriend. Your second brother asked me to come back and see if it’s true.”

Huo Jingrui looked up. ”You all know already?”

Jiang Jingya busied herself serving food to her granddaughter and grandson, trying to mask her guilt. However, she ultimately yielded to her son’s piercing gaze. ”Didn’t you say the marriage application was approved? Even though you can’t hold the wedding banquet yet, it’s practically set in stone. Gao Ruyi looked at her young brother-in-law, her face alight with gossip. ”Got a girlfriend before retiring?”

Huo Jingrui did have one, but he didn’t feel like showing it. ”I didn’t bring it with me.”
