Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 285: Chapter 285 Unusual Movements, Alertness

She waited until nightfall, but Guo Shuiyu still hadn’t shown up.

After checking on the few patients in the infirmary ward, Yunyi took a lunch box from her space and reentered Guo Anyi’s ward.

Her plan had been for him to stay here until his aunt came to fetch him, but Guo Shuiyu had vanished without a trace.

Approaching the bedside, she sensed the boy was awake. ”There’s a saying: ’Man is iron, food is steel.’ You fell into the water, so you must eat. If your body’s resistance is low and you develop a fever in the middle of the night, that will be even more troublesome.”

Considering the boy’s pride, she added, ”Think of this meal as a loan from me. You can repay me when you have the chance. Whether you eat it or not is up to you.”

With that said, she placed the meal on the bedside table and turned to leave the ward.

Guo Anyi watched Yunyi’s retreating figure. After a long moment, he made up his mind. Yes, what good is pride? I have to stay alive first.

He resolved to remember the kindness of the doctor—the same one who had treated him when he was first brought in injured.
He struggled to open the lunch box. Inside, he found cabbage stewed with tofu and two coarse-grain flatbreads. His eyes reddened.

Ever since he was sent to his aunt’s, he had only been well-fed for the first few months. As time went on, his portion of food dwindled.

Every time his aunt protested, her sister-in-law would raise such a ruckus that the entire household was thrown into chaos. Helpless, his aunt could only save her own food for him.

Once, when his aunt was working in the fields, she fainted. The Zhang Family became a laughingstock because of it, and the Zhang family’s grandmother never treated him kindly.

From then on, he refused the food his aunt saved for him. He didn’t want his aunt to leave him one day too, like the others.

Thinking of his grandfather’s words when he was sent away, fat tears dripped into the lunch box. He really missed his grandfather.

Yunyi stood outside the door, her heart aching at the child’s expression.

Seeing the boy eat heartily, she finally turned and walked towards the office at the front.

Flipping through the medical records on the table, her thoughts drifted to the smoked bacon and cured meats she had prepared and stored in her space. I’ll send them off on my day off, the day after tomorrow, she decided. That’ll take a weight off my mind.

Just as she closed the case file, she heard an unusual noise outside. Extending her spiritual power, she scanned the area and spotted two suspicious figures creeping toward the infirmary.

She stood up alertly.

Recognizing their ill intentions from their faces, she took a sturdy stick—one she’d found in the mountains earlier—from her space as a precaution.

The two didn’t use the main entrance of the infirmary. Instead, they circled around to the back near the wards, making Yunyi think of Guo Anyi.

She hurried to the back and concealed herself, waiting to see their next move.

Just as I guessed, she thought, as the two used a tree outside the courtyard to climb the wall and jump in. Definitely not good people. Yunyi tightened her grip on the stick.

Seeing them head straight for Guo Anyi’s ward, she knew they were prepared and must have gathered information beforehand.

Just as she was about to rush out, she heard more people outside the courtyard wall. When she saw them quickly scale the wall and engage the first two intruders, she retreated further into the shadows.

The first two intruders, seeing things were going badly, panicked. One of them tried to flee, heading straight for Yunyi’s hiding spot. With a swift strike of her stick, Yunyi brought him to his knees.
