He Traded the System for My Rebirth, and I Led Him Across the Apocalypse

48: Bright BaseSpeaking of this matter, Director Zhang frowned and said:

”Yes, there is. I was just about to talk to you about this matter! Have you noticed that there have been more helicopters in our Huaxia recently?”

”Although it has been the third year of the Apocalypse, a few powerful families or bases from before the Apocalypse might have one or two helicopters. But the day before yesterday, our troops on the late-night patrol discovered something suspicious.”

”Because it is the extreme night, there is no day or night, so everyone rests according to the time.”

”After midnight, besides the zombies, basically no one goes out. This is also a notice issued by The Authorities. For safety and better rest, even the patrol teams return to the base on time and deploy again at five in the morning the next day.”

”But yesterday, our last patrol team was delayed in withdrawing because of something. Unexpectedly, they discovered helicopters dispersing and sprinkling something down from the air. When they tried to look closely, there was nothing left.”

”According to them, the helicopters appeared more frequently in places where zombies were gathered.”

Lin Wan was startled.

”You mean someone is deliberately spreading the virus? This despicable method sounds so familiar. Could it be that Country M is making a comeback so soon?”

”Such a major discovery, why didn’t you tell everyone just now so we could take precautions?”

Director Zhang’s expression was stern, sharp, and imposing.

”Because some bases are still secretly aiding and abetting the enemy.”

”What!”

”That’s right. Japan has been infiltrating us for too long before. Six months ago, because of the Mu Lin Family incident and the intelligence you brought back, an investigation revealed that there were indeed several high-ranking officials manipulating things from behind the scenes, providing them with convenience. As we traced the threads, all these people were tainted.”

”It has been half a year. After a series of thunderous measures by the higher-ups to investigate and clean house, things have finally returned to clarity. However, in the Apocalypse, things are too chaotic, and how many families hidden among the masses are there besides the Mu Lin Family?”

”There are currently two suspected targets, but we don’t know which base is the foreign power’s pawn. Before we can investigate clearly, it’s best not to alert the enemy.”

”Although we have a general idea of the dynamics of the major bases, we still lack understanding of the details. The main point is that the influence of these two bases is not small. If it is truly them, the repercussions will be significant.”

”However, this matter cannot be delayed. We are accelerating the investigation process. Today, we have also dispatched an aerial patrol team. The more zombies there are, the more unfavorable it is for our Huaxia.”

”I trust you people from Qingyun Base the most, so I am telling you this to make you cautious.”

”Because they are very likely targeting your Qingyun Base as well. After all, almost everyone knows you have spatial abilities. It is a tool for protection, but it is too powerful and can easily attract danger and covetousness. You must also protect yourself well.”

Lin Wan’s expression became grave.

”Okay, we will also be careful and will investigate when we have the chance.”

”Mm, you are all at the highest level of ability users. Having your help would be best...”

...

Not long after the two finished talking, Shen Mo Chi and the others returned, and the group went back to the base.

Everyone ate dinner together. Lin Wan told them the entire story.

Shen Mo Chi leaned back against the chair, his eyes deep.

”This is not a matter concerning one person or one base; it concerns all of us.”

”They used internal information to know that after midnight, the streets were basically only filled with zombies, so they deliberately chose this time. What they sprinkled should also be a virus specifically researched for zombies. Based on the previous incident with the underwater zombie base, this is very likely retaliation from Country M and Country R against our Huaxia!”

Ji Chuan nodded.

”AChi is right. The zombies gaining consciousness is a very serious matter. Many people will be caught off guard and fall victim.”

”Yes, a relative who was chatting and laughing with you one moment might bite your neck the next. This has happened more than once in the past couple of days.”
