Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 934: Chapter 935: Brave and Resourceful

While driving, he told Chiang Xiao about his money-making adventures, casting himself as a seasoned player who had weathered many storms in the business world. He wove in several incredibly harrowing stories that were so exaggerated, Chiang Xiao thought she was listening to a dramatized tale.

Ji Chunlai looked to be around twenty-four or twenty-five years old with average looks, but his shrewd, lively spirit was apparent.

”You wouldn’t believe it, but last year, a few very mysterious men approached me, wanting to hire me to transport some mountain goods for them,” he said. ”The moment I heard it, I had a bad feeling, you know? But they offered me a hefty sum, five hundred bucks just for one trip! So, tell me, should I have taken the offer or not?”

Chiang Xiao glanced at him, resting one hand on the car window and touching her forehead. This guy was a real talker. She hadn’t even been participating in the conversation, yet he had been going on and on nonstop.

She said resignedly, ”I think in the end, you went anyway.”

With Ji Chunlai’s character, she felt he certainly would have taken the risk in the end.

”Sis, you’re really smart. I obviously went for it for that five hundred,” Ji Chunlai said. ”But I was cautious, you know? Heading into the mountains with those men, how could I not be scared? I took a lot of weapons with me. And do you know what they were transporting? All sorts of fur, including whole big cat pelts!”

Big cat, that is to say, tiger.

Chiang Xiao took another look at him when she heard this.

Ji Chunlai continued, ”After I transported them to the designated spot, they kept stalling on paying me. They told me to wait for them, promising to treat me to a good meal after they finished their business. I certainly wasn’t there for a meal, but I had no choice but to wait. You know, at that time, they were five strong, and I, alone with a bunch of sticks and knives, was no match for them. So, I waited, until it was almost dinner time, and they asked me to drive again, claiming we were going to pick someone up. What you don’t know is that I was pretty familiar with the area they mentioned, and it was a remote place. The moment I heard it, I suspected something fishy.”

”Hmm, and then what happened?”

Since this chatterbox wouldn’t stop talking, Chiang Xiao, with no chance to let her mind wander, just followed on with the conversation.

Ji Chunlai’s tone grew animated as he said, ”By then, I realized they must be planning to lure me out there to kill me and silence me for good. So, I drove them around in circles, eventually leading them right into the police station! You can’t imagine how tense I was! As soon as the car entered the gate, I slammed on the brakes. Before it even came to a full stop, I threw open the door, jumped out, and started shouting that there were criminals in my car, that there were villains, and to come and arrest them!”

As Ji Chunlai spoke, he became very animated, and Chiang Xiao watched him, half afraid he would take his hands off the wheel and flail about in excitement.

”In the end, those men were arrested, and it turned out they had a history of such crimes and had actually killed someone before—a person who had helped them transport goods! Let me tell you, sis, the police even awarded me a banner for my bravery. If you don’t believe me, I can show it to you when we get back. I didn’t lie to you one bit!”

Chiang Xiao laughed.

”Then you really are both brave and strategic.”
