Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 555: Chapter 556 A gulp of old blood

After hanging up the phone, Chiang Xiao thought it over and decided to give Meng Xinian a call. After all, there was no need for her to just ”disappear without notice,” right? She hadn’t done anything wrong.

Sure, that wasn’t something a mature person would do.

However, she didn’t want to see Meng Xinian anytime soon.

Just thinking about him fighting a duel over a woman with another man made her feel somewhat annoyed.

He still bore the title of ”Chiang Xiao’s fiancé,” after all. Besides, it wasn’t like she hadn’t emphasized her disapproval, yet he still crossed the line.

Once she found the right opportunity, once her teahouse was up and running, once her grandparents had adjusted to city life and were away from the people of Peace Town and Siyang Village and started feeling that her broken engagement was no big deal, she would definitely tell them that she’d broken off her engagement with Meng Xinian.

Of course, before that happened, she had to find the chance to speak to Meng Xinian face to face, to clear things up and break off the engagement.

Otherwise, she would feel too awkward.

With this in mind, Chiang Xiao called Meng Xinian’s military camp.

When Meng Xinian answered the phone and heard Chiang Xiao’s voice, his tone instantly flared up like a ball of fire.

”Chiang Xiaoxiao, I’m giving you two minutes to explain why you didn’t send any letters.”

Chiang Xiao was stunned for a moment, then chuckled lightly, her tone airy, ”No reason really. I just felt that my life was just so-so, nothing interesting to write about, so I stopped.”

Stopped... just like that.

This nonchalant and lightly rising tone was like a sharp knife that swiftly pierced Meng Xinian’s heart.

If anyone had told him before that a seemingly ordinary phrase could hurt him, he would have found it ridiculous. But now he truly understood.

In fact, he felt momentarily too drained to speak.

He had cherished her letters so much, reading each one over ten times, and he had always replied to each one with great care. Now, hearing her tone, it seemed as though corresponding with him was a trivial matter, take it or leave it, not worth doing if there wasn’t anything new to write about.

”Chiang Xiaoxiao, I remember telling you to write before I left for my special training.” His throat hadn’t been well these past few days, he didn’t know if it was because he’d been holding back anger and frustration, causing his throat to remain sore, his voice still husky and painful.

Chiang Xiao could tell something was off with his voice. She suppressed the urge to ask and replied, ”Yeah, seems like you did.”

”Seems like I did?” Meng Xinian gritted his teeth.

”But I really had nothing I wanted to write about. I can’t be forced to write, can I? Besides, you were going for training and wouldn’t receive it anyway.”

Meng Xinian felt like he was about to spit blood.

Wouldn’t he be able to read them immediately upon his return from training? Moreover, he had a ton of things he wanted to write to her about, so why did she not even have a single word to say to him?

Before he could speak, Chiang Xiao added, ”I just called back to Brother Hu and found out you were looking for me. Is there something you needed?”

Oh, so she called Hu Xibing and learned he was looking for her, and that’s why she called? Otherwise, she wouldn’t have thought to call?

Meng Xinian gritted his teeth, feeling as if his heart was being punched repeatedly.

For a moment, he didn’t even know what to say.

At the same time, he felt incredibly childish. Why was he so earnestly discussing whether to write letters or not?

He felt like he should just go to her immediately and give her a good spanking!
