Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 232: Chapter 232: It’s Hard to Guard Against a Thief in the Family - A Slap in the Face (Seeking monthly pass, seeking subscription)

This old woman, this old woman...

Seeing Zhao Xin unable to rebut and still seething with anger to the point of a brain hemorrhage, Chiang Xiao took advantage of Xu Linjiang coming over to help. She sidestepped and charged forward, pulling her away from her grandma. With one hand, she grabbed her collar, and with the other, she raised her hand high, showing no mercy as she forcefully slapped across her face.

Slap, slap, slap, slap, slap!

No one could count how many times she struck; her movements were too fast, as she swept Ho Laidi with seven or eight slaps in one go.

In an instant, Ho Laidi’s face swelled up.

”You old witch! That’ll teach you for your foul mouth! You must have forgotten the dirty foot water I splashed on you last time! It seems next time I will need to splash you with urine! Only by beating you till you fall will you remember! Curse again, go on and curse! Each time you spew a word, I’ll land a slap! If you dare, keep cursing!”

She really thought she was still like before.

At this point, Ho Laidi could hardly curse, her face so swollen it resembled a pig’s head, and speaking tugged at her cheeks. She was used to speaking loudly and couldn’t do so quietly; she seemed like she had lost her soul.

Chiang Xiao, already seeing red, pushed her with a fierce shove towards Song Xiyun.

Song Xiyun got a huge fright, thinking she was going to be hit next, and with a cry, leaped aside, calling out in panic, ”Don’t hit me, don’t hit me! It’s not my fault, I just overheard you guys saying there was something to take, and I told mom. It was her who called people to try to take it back!”

As soon as these words came out, Chiang Songhai’s figure swayed, and he could hardly believe his own ears.

He had indeed found it strange!

He knew they had to be discreet and had been very careful. He didn’t dare say anything to his spouse on the road, only mentioning he needed to make another trip to town to see the doctor when renting the ox cart, not letting slip a single word. Even when driving the ox cart to Nameless Creek, he was very attentive to avoid people, so in theory, nothing should have gone wrong.

Yet just as he met with Ge Dejun, these people followed, stopping them and accusing them of stealing from Siyang Village, demanding they leave everything behind.

Only now he realized that it was Song Xiyun, who had always liked to eavesdrop over walls and corners, who heard the news and told Ho Laidi. And Ho Laidi actually sought out these idlers, conspiring to rob their belongings!

Wasn’t this the act of an insider traitor?!

Guard by day and night, but to guard against one’s own is hard indeed!

But, for what reason had she done it? Weren’t they supposed to be family?

Chiang Songhai trembled, disbelieving as he looked at Ho Laidi, unable to accept this truth.

How could he believe it!

All these years, no matter how the Old Chiang Family enslaved him or humiliated him, he always felt they were family. Whether someone gained or lost a bit didn’t matter; at the end of the day, they were still one family. Should an outsider come to bully them, they would point their guns outward, band together, and overcome any adversity!

But what was the reality?

The reality was Ho Laidi and Song Xiyun had slapped him hard in the face!

The questions Chiang Xiao had asked him earlier echoed over and over in his mind. How could he expect the Old Chiang Family to treat them as one of their own?

He didn’t expect their help anymore, would that be okay?

But at the very least, it shouldn’t be like this: they had instigated the conflict, these people were brought by them, and even Ho Laidi joined in harassing them!

Chiang Songhai’s chest heaved with roiling blood, a sweetness rose in his throat, almost spitting out a mouthful of blood.

”So you like eavesdropping around corners, huh?” Chiang Xiao could hardly suppress the urge to rush over and finish her off, but her grandma was more important right now.

Seeing Zhao Xin had already slung the water jug on his back, Chiang Xiao immediately called out, ”Xinzi, give me the water!”
